Menya Saimi is not only the most popular miso ramen restaurant in all of Sapporo, it’s also one of the most popular restaurants, period. They even have their own souvenirs and a branded line of packaged ramen you can purchase in the supermarket to make yourself at home.
The broth has a rich, deep flavor, but without any heaviness or too much lard. It’s the perfect balance between light and heavy. The noodles are made fresh on site and are thick, curly and cooked perfectly. There’s just a touch of ginger and a generous helping of two types of chashu (salt pork). Portions are generous as well, and reasonably priced at just ¥750 yen. However, there’s a price to pay for such delicious ramen; you can expect to wait anywhere from 15-30 minutes, as there is always a long queue. It’s also a little bit far out from downtown and requires a drive or subway ride to get to, making it a little inconvenient for tourists. Menya Saimi is the Japanese equivalent of a greasy spoon diner; all the care in the world is given to the food, but not very much to the to the shop’s exterior or interior. Ramen is traditionally fast food, and it’s eaten here quickly at the simple wooden counter while a line of people waiting looks over your shoulder. Not fine dining, but worth it all nonetheless!
Menya Saimi is located 3 blocks southwest of Misono Station on the Sapporo Subway Toho Line (blue line). Take the subway from Sapporo Station or Odori Station to Misono Station, and exit from Exit 3. Then walk 2 blocks southwest on Kanjo Dori (street) and turn right. Walk 3 blocks northwest and you’ll see the faded yellow awning of Menya Saimi and a line of people out front.
