There are three broad categories of fruit-tree,small bush and cane, and vine.
These categories describe the growth habit of the fruit.
Tree fruits (e.g.,apples, mangoes) are popular with home gardeners as well as large producers.
They are of various types and different in size and the length of time they take from planting them to producing the first crop.
Small bush fruits (e.g.,strawberries,blueberries) are also excellent for home gardens and small farms.
They require less maintenance than tree fruits or vine fruits.
Vine fruits, such as grapes, need to be trained and pruned for adequate production yield.
Like vegetables, fruits add flavor and variety to our diets, but most of them contain nutrients only in low concentrations.
Some fruits, such as citrus, are exceptions to this general rule and provide an excellent source of vitamin C.
Examples of fruit crops that do contain nutrients are the banana, coconut, date, and avocado.
The continuing problcms of fruil production and use are the seasonal nature of fruits and their perishability.
However, today, fruits can be preserved by canning and freezing.
Efficient transport and marketing systems also make fruits readily available without spoilage.
