The ER imposed on the subjects caused the restriction
of carbohydrate to 86 (17) g and while it is unlikely
that muscle glycogen content was decreased, as subjects
refrained from physical activity during trials (Maughan
& Williams, 1981), it is likely liver glycogen content was
reduced (Nilsson & Hultman, 1973). Glycogen is stored
with potassium in a ratio of ~0.45 mmol potassium to
1 g glycogen (Patrick, 1977).
