More than 30,000 temples across the country will hold prayer sessions during the countdown to the New Year.
The sessions will begin late on New Year's Eve and run till about 1am on January 1.
Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Yutthawong said yesterday that Phutthamonthon Buddhist Park in Nakhon Pathom and Wat Paknam in Bangkok were among the main venues for these activities.
"It's a way to honour His Majesty the King on the occasion of his 87th anniversary," he said.
The National Office of Buddhism, the Sangha Supreme Council, the Stop Drink Network, and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation will jointly hold the Countdown Prayer Session for a Good Start and for a Good Life.
A survey by Abac Poll found more than 88 per cent of respondents wished to pray during the countdown hours so that they could glide into the New Year with a happy, compassionate heart.
