Today’s view of the subconscious is very different from that of Freud (Bargh, 2002). Freud believed that the subconscious hid beliefs that ideally should not be hidden, and that the goal of psychotherapy is to uncover these beliefs. The modern view is that the subconscious is adaptive and functional because it enables us to perform some types of mental tasks automatically---without awareness or intention---and this allows us to pay more attention to other tasks that require more attention. Mental tasks become automatic through practice: The more you practice performing a particular task, the easier it becomes to perform that task until, eventually, you can perform it almost effortlessly.
