The ideal lab module is 10 ft-6 in. This might change to 11 ft, depending on physical influences such as fume hoods, benchtop equipment, structural spacing and other building requirements and user constraints. The 10-ft-6-in lab module contains the most fundamental guidelines for the most widely accepted generic lab configurations. The sub-regions of the 10-ft-6-in module consist of two rows of 2-ft-6-in-wide lab benches, a 5-ft-wide center aisle and two 6-in-wide walls. If a lab is designed too wide, there’s a loss of user efficiency and additional energy cost penalties for heating and cooling the additional space over the building’s life. If the lab is too narrow, there’s a loss of efficient workflow production and functionality. The pairing of the lab bench and aisle influences every facet of the lab, and when improperly altered to adapt to an existing building grid; can be detrimental on performance, production and function.
