D> 4. Remember, you want the students to begin the opening activity as soon as they enter classroom. If they have to wait for the assignment or for directions on how to complete it, this will defeat the purpose. Below are some suggestions to get the ball rollingใ
Make sure the assignment is something students can work on with little or no direct instruction from the teacher. Place journals, worksheets, or any other supplies the students will need just inside the classroom door to enable them to gather the materials as they walk toward their desks.
If you have time before the class enters, consider placing the activity on the students' desks.
Write the assignment on the board, and teach students to read the board each day as soon as they sit down.
On the board, record the time by which the students must complete the activity, and collect it at the designated time.
Keep in mind that students will be more likely to comply with classroom expectations some sort positive attached. You may choose to collect and enter the opening assignment into your grade book for extra credit and/or conduct a raffle every so often. Pull a few completed opening assignments out of the pile of collected work, and pass out a small prize to the winners
