VYCOR® glass code 7930 is an open-cell, porous glass which exhibits excellent absorbing
properties. Due to its porosity, this material has an internal surface area of approximately
250 square meters per gram. Thus, even a small bead of “Thirsty” glass presents a very large
absorbing surface.
VYCOR® porous glass is mechanically hard and strong, nondusting, nonflaking, and
chemically inert. These properties permit it to be employed as a noncontaminating getter -
it rapidly absorbs water and organic contaminants. This porous glass is presently being used
in transistors, microminiature relays and other small devices. It has practical application in
any sealed device that requires freedom from foreign contaminants.
VYCOR® porous glass is often used for filtration and separation of compounds. The open-cell
network allows permeability on a selective basis -- the species must be smaller than the
microscopic pores to pass through the porous glass. The homogeneous pore diameters can
be controlled to average between 40 and 200 Angstroms. Advantages of VYCOR® porous
glass for filtration include rigidity, chemical inertness, high temperature capability (up to
600 °C), superior thermal shock resistance (up to 600 °C when dry), and controlled
microporosity. These advantages allow higher processing temperatures and pressures, back
flushing or burnout cleansing, and processing of most corrosive products.
VYCOR® porous glass is available in standard forms such as tubing, rod and sheet made into
small shapes using the Multiform technique. The Multiform process which is analogous to
powder metallurgy enables one to obtain unique small configurations. Thus, the glass can
be designed to take advantage of available space in small sealed devices.
Because VYCOR® porous glass is an excellent getter, cleanliness in handling is necessary to
insure the purity of this material, it is stored and shipped in deionized water. The water acts
as a protective coating because it fills and surrounds the getter. Naturally the water must be
removed for activation of the porous glass.
