Growth experiments were repeated with V.fischeri cultured
with 125nM3OC6-HSL and 0.25nMC8-HSL.Opticaldensity and bioluminescence were monitored throughout growth to
determine the impact of free and functionalized b-CD.All cultures were grown in defined minimal medium (Studeretal.,
2008),and therefore were not in a rich nutrient environment.
Additional growth studies indicated that the bacteria did not
thriveon b-CDorthevariousSi-NPs.Also,when all carbon
sources in the defined minimal medium were replaced with b-
CD,nogrowth occurred.Cultures grown without the addition
of HSLs produced negligible levels of bioluminescence. Therefore, b-CD,with or without NPs,did not influence the growth
or relative health of the cells.
