This parasite is transmitted via person to person, waterborne, foodborne, and zoonotic (i.e., transmission of the pathogen from infected animals to humans) routes. Several drinking water-associated outbreaks were documented around the globe and two notorious ones occurred in the United States. An outbreak in Carrollton, Georgia, affected approximately 13.000 people and was associated with the consumption of drinking water from a water treatment plant with ineffective flocculation and faulty rapid sand filtration (Hayes et al., 1989).
