A study of factors determining traffic accidents among students in Songkhla Province was aimed; to compare
the foundation of driving behavior of the students who have incurred traffic accidents and those who have not had any
traffic accidents;to find the discrimination function coefficients of the foundation of driving behavior and incidences of
traffic accidents;and to predict the grouping of subjects using the classification functions of the subjects foundation of
driving behavior. The nature of the investigation is a correlation study. The samples for the study were 949 students from
educational institutions in Songkhla. The instrument used in the study consisted of a test on the subjects knowledge and
understanding of traffic rules and driving experience, and a set of questionnaire asking affective domain in driving and
accident preventive behavior. The results of the study revealed the following:
The foundation of driving behavior of the students who have incurred traffic accidents and those who have not
showed a significant difference on all variables involved. There was a statistical significance in the discriminant
correlations between the foundation of driving behavior and the incidences of traffic accident,i.e.knowledge and
understanding of traffic rules, affective domain in driving, and driving experience. There was no statistical significance in
the discriminant correlation between the accident preventive behavior and incidences of traffic accidents. The grouping
of the subjects can be predicted by the classification functions at 69.55 %.
Suggestions were made for further study. It was recommended that an instrument was developed for more
accurate measurement of the foundation of driving behavior in order to classify the group which was prone to
incidence of traffic accidents. Further investigation should be made also on non-student population.
