Selective breeding programs with major tilapia species (i.e., Nile
tilapia, blue tilapia and red tilapia) have, however, been established
during the recent years to develop genetically improved seed for different production systems in China. All species are selected to improve
their growth performances in different freshwater environments. Nile
tilapia has also been selected to improve filet traits (Thodesen et al.,
2012), while blue tilapia and red tilapia are being selected to improve
their pond survival and tolerance to cold water and high salinity
water, respectively. Red tilapia is also being selected to improve external color traits. This paper reports genetic parameters and selection
responses in growth, pond survival and cold-water tolerance of blue
tilapia after four generations of multi-trait selection.
