Both CYP2A6 and CYP2A13 are involved in metabolic activation of NNK and NNAL via α-hydroxylation. During the process, α-hydroxylation of NNK and NNAL occurs at either methylene or methyl carbon adjacent to the N-nitroso group to generate the unstable intermediates.
