From 2000 until 2009, a total of 215 accidents including sinking or foundering, collision, fire or explosion and grounding occurred in the Straits of Malacca with an average of 30 accidents per year. About 353 vessels of all types passes through the Straits of Malacca each year and 35% of them are oil tankers and this has potential to increase the discharges of oil in the sea including ballast water, oil, sewage and others solid wastes.
