SENSORY SYSTEM
In addition to the physiologic changes noted in Tables 9-1 to 9-4, the senses of hearing, smell, taste, touch, and vision develop and begin to connect, as toddlers utilize all five senses to explorethe world and exert autonomy and independence. Caregivers and health care providers need to be aware of behaviors reflecting hearing and vision difficulties such as failure to develop language, unusual responses to loud sounds, or increased falls. Baseline hearing and vision screening should be performed during toddlerhood and appropriate strategies begun immediately, if necessary (Grover,2008c). Refer to chapter 31 for more information.
