Motorists and commuters are braced for a long traffic nightmare starting Monday due to the demolition of a flyover to clear the area for a mass transit line construction project.
Pol Col Ekkarak Limsungkat, deputy chief of the Traffic Police Division, warned road users on Sunday of traffic jams especially during rush hours from Monday as workers will tear down the flyover crossing Kasetsart University intersection.
Drivers are strongly advised to avoid the road and use alternatives including Vibhavadi Rangsit Road to go in and out of Bangkok, he added.
The bridge demolition and construction of the elevated Green Line for the Mor Chit-Ku Kot section will take about three years. The line will largely run along Phahon Yothin road.
Traffic police from Phahon Yothin, Bang Khen, Khok Kram, Sai Mai and Vibhavadi police stations will be deployed on Monday to handle expected traffic chaos as Phahon Yothin is a main road linking northern suburban areas and the capital.
The flyover was closed on Saturday night to prepare for the demolition work. The asphalt surface of the structure is being removed before it is torn down.
Traffic police on Saturday reported that vehicles were moving slowly on both the inbound and outbound lanes of the road due to the flyover closure.
