Due to its small genome size,mungbean can be regarded
as a model plant among Vigna species. Therefore, in-depth
studies of the regulatory mechanisms underlying stress or
environmental responses are needed to help develop crops
that can withstand changing weather patterns and to enable
them to grow in harsh environments such as those found
in Sub Saharan Africa. This would help in further expansion
of mungbean worldwide. Collecting and resequencing wild
mungbean from different geographical areas would help
researchers investigate allelic variation in beneficial traits
that can be mined from wild mungbean. Notably, a wild
mungbean genome sequence was released by Kang et al.
(2014). Utilizing genomic resources is a promising route for
translational genomics studies (Varshney et al., 2015), and this
new resource opens the door to genomic research in other Vigna
species.
