In women presenting with hypertension in the first half of pregnancy it is
important to look for an underlying cause. These investigations
should at least include:
Urine analysis and protein creatinine ratio (looking for
blood, protein or glucose and quantification of the degree
of proteinuria).
Urea and electrolytes
Renal tract ultrasound
Women with underlying renal disease, particularly with
raised pre-pregnancy creatinine are at significantly increased risk
of poor pregnancy outcome and require multidisciplinary care.
