MCU Delays Teacher Pay
Part-time teachers of undergraduate classes in the Faculty of Humanities have not received any payment for their teaching since the beginning of the term in June at the main Ayutthaya campus of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya (MCU), largest of the two Buddhist universities in Thailand. The term ends in two weeks. Like most universities today, MCU has more temporary teachers than full-time faculty to instruct students. Unlike permanent faculty, part-timers are paid by the hour in cash. Explanations for the delay hint at misappropriation of funds for projects other than teacher payments. This is not the first time pay has been delayed but it's the longest in my 8 years at MCU. Fortunately for me, I have a retirement income from the U.S. But many part-time MCU teachers must survive on their teaching pay and delays cause suffering. The Faculty of Humanities has been rapidly expanding its programs, both undergraduate and graduate, and it will be difficult to recruit teachers who would prefer being paid on time, monthly. Since repeated requests for payment for hours worked have not been successful, I'm turning to social media for support and perhaps some resolution to the problem. And I am tagging all relevant parties who should be aware of this situation.
