well [8–11]. They are known to have interesting and,
more importantly, tuneable properties. Depending on
the organic cation and inorganic anion the ILs consist
of, they can have very different physical and chemical
properties. The organic cation determines the
solubility, the density and the viscosity of the liquids.
Even when working with a single cation, e.g. the imidazolium
cation, the properties of the IL are highly
variable through the different possibilities of alkyl
groups. The Lewis-acidity of ILs is dependent on the
metal halide chosen and the ratio of metal halide to
organic base
