Increasing use of video display units (cathode ray tubes, or CRTs, and key- boards) to communicate with computers has resulted in a need to optimize the design of these workplaces. In many console applications the operator must activate controls as well as enter data through the keyboard. Information covering acceptable reaches for seated and standing workplaces has been presented earlier. This section will address the location of the terminal, the viewing requirements, and the design approaches that minimize environmental distractions.
