During the last decade, microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology,
which enables the direct conversion of the chemical energy contained
in organic materials into electrical energy by microbial action,
has been attracting attention as a novel method for harvesting
energy from renewable biomass resources (1e4). MFC technology
exploits the catabolic activities of microbes to produce electricity
from organic material by spatially separating the oxidation of
organic compounds and the reduction of an electron acceptor.
Wastewater treatment has been one of the most widely investigated
applications of MFC technology. Many types of wastewater,
such as domestic wastewater (5,6), dye wastewater (7,8), brewery
wastewater (9,10) and starch and potato processing wastewater
(11,12), have been used as the substrate in MFCs for electricity
production. To accomplish the goal of cleaning water and reducing
sludge as part of a wastewater treatment protocol, biomass and
organic compounds must be oxidized into CO2 via microbial
metabolism.
