Regarding caption please be advised that the one of the plant of BSCAP had the damage by fraud related to the payment for raw material.
We would like to share with you in order to avoid recurrence and call your members’ attention to this kind of potential risk on procurement activity.
Brief summary of this incident is as follows;
1. Fraudster sent the e-mail under the name of existing major raw material supplier to the person in charge of purchasing requesting to make the payment for one specific P/O to the different bank account. (Beg of May)
2. Fraudster used wrong e-mail address which only one character is different from the correct one, e.g. xxxx@bridgestome.com instead of xxxx@bridgestone.com, but nobody recognized its difference.
3. BSCAP Plant rejected their request several times due to the lack of information but their request was finally accepted (several necessary actions were missed on these procedures) then bank made the payment to the fraudster’s account, around US$90K. (End of June)
4. Supplier (not the fraudster) informed plant that they had not yet received payment for the P/O, then plant recognized the fraud. (Beg of August)
5. BSCAP plant had requested their bank to refund the money but the bank informed they could not refund because the money was already credited to fraudster’s account. (Beg of Oct)
