The title of this Raoul Hausmann art piece declares that dada wins! But, I didn't know that I was in a race. Can we start again? I don't have the right shoes on.
What we have here is a dada style collage over watercolor and other media, done in 1920. I love the piece. The placement of unrelated objects in strange relation to each other makes for an ambiguous work that requires participation from the audience. But who knows, maybe the artist had no intention whatsoever behind the art's composition. Isn't that the point of dada? In its absurdist endeavor to challenge art's boundaries its existence need not serve artistic purpose, which IS sort of artful, right?
But I really like analyzing things, and this one has a million possibilities. Images of industry and human anatomy may indicate desire for progress and moving on after WWI. I especially like the framed vantage of the street and sidewalks, as if replacing a (possibly) sadder view of the real street below, had there been a window instead. Sure, just create your own view if you're not happy with the one you've got. "391" painted on the side of a building in the "view" is a reference to the dada periodical of the same name, I'm guessing.
Weimar art is overflowing with emotion. How could it not be? I cannot attempt to describe the horror that people must have experienced because I was not there. Art is the healthy outlet that society takes refuge in when everything else fails.
