The second sample was drawn from a cross-sectional study of environmental factors affecting children’s dietary intake that was part of a school-based clinical trial to reduce obesity. Fifthgrade students enrolled in 8 low-income elementary schools in San Jose, CA, participated in this project. The students’ mothers were contacted at school events and through telephone solicitation. The families of the children enrolled in these schools were primarily Mexican American and low income. Written informed consentwasobtainedfromthechildrenandtheirmothersduringthe first interview. This sample is referred to as the fifth-grade sample.
