These results show that once cultures are obtained to generate the electrophoretic profiles for each species, it is possible
to use PFGE as a complementary technique for species classification. Therefore, the PFGE technique may be of great use in study of species within the Saccharomyces genus; yet, this must be carried out carefully, as the occurrence of polymorphisms should not always be interpreted as evidence of a distinct species. Even greater care must be taken with S. cerevisiae, in which it is quite common to observe a certain degree of chromosomal polymorphism among different strains. On the other hand, when the chromosomal profiles are identical, the identification of the species can be confirmed with a great degree of confidence
