For years there has been a discussion among English teachers of whether grammar should be taught in school and if it should be, then what is the best way to do it?Most agree, albeit in varying degrees, that there is an importance in teaching grammar.
Although there are successes with different techniques, research shows that a combination of approaches, which includes note taking and applications, best serves the
learner.I chose this topic out of sheer frustration in teaching grammar concepts that no one remembers. I feel grammar is important, but I sympathize with the frustrated students who do not see the connection between grammar concepts and writing skills. I desperately want to make what I teach relevant.Historically, "grammar was taught as a discrete set of rigid rules to be memorized, practiced, and followed" (Christy, n.d., p. 1). This type of grammar, which focuses on
rules and drills, is called prescriptive grammar.
