The Music Therapy Group
Following approval from the research ethics board at Wilfrid Laurier
University, a music therapy group was identified. The group comprised
seven remarkable people—two men (Arthur and Leo) and five women
(Daisy, Florence, Gertie, Kathleen, and Patricia)—ranging from 79 to 92
years of age. Although each group member had a diagnosis of dementia,
each presented only mild to moderate levels of dementia and all were able to
communicate verbally. As part of the study, 13 group music therapy sessions
were videotaped and studied. During these sessions group members were
invited to engage in a variety of music therapy interventions and musical
experiences using instruments and singing. Some of these included cued bell
playing; structured and rhythmic drumming; instrument playing, sometimes
with spontaneous improvisations; and group and solo singing. Because this
group had been together prior to the commencement of the research study, a
level of trust and relationship was already well established.
