Given that recommendations for gestationalweight gain were set by expert panels from Westerncountries, it is not known whether these guidelineswould be applied to Asian women. The aim of this studywas to determine the effect of inadequate gestationalweight gain (<12 kg) on adverse pregnancy outcomesamong Thai gravidas who had underweight. Specifically,we focused on the adverse outcomes which are majorpublic health problems or impose substantial costs onoverall economy. These included LBW, SGA, birthasphyxia, and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)admission. A further aim was to search for the thresholdof gestational weight gain which was significantlyassociated with any of these four adverse outcomes inunderweight women.
