weigh your product to determine the yield
run an IR spectrum of your product
the IR will indicate whether or not your cyclohexanone product is pure
likely impurities are water, cyclohexanol,cyclohexene
in the past, students have observed the presence of methylene chloride in the IR of their product
Methylene chloride is easily identified in an IR spectrum by two bands, one at 1262cm-1 and one at 739 cm-1 (see figure 14.1,below)
due to its high density, residual methylene chloride can quickly give you a product yield in excess of 100%
if you get an unreasonably hhigh yield, look for these bands in your IR and explain your results in your laboratory write-up
