This document is also silent on how to
achieve a balance between environmental protection and shrimp
cultivation. This conflict has been reflected in the case of Khushi
Kabir and others vs. Government of Bangladesh and others, 2000.
Here the petitioners state that commercial shrimp cultivation
involves the usage of various chemicals and saline water which
eventually makes the soil infertile and unsuitable for soil cultivation
and it further damages the environment by causing stunted
growth of the trees or their death, reducing the grazing areas for
cattle by increasing water logging, and adversely affecting the size
of the openwater fish catch as a result of the dumping of chemicals
into the river (Mohammad, 2011)
