4.3. Characteristics of the fabricated optical filters
Because of the broad emission of OLEDs, an overlap with the
fluorescent emission peak of the analyte could be expected. Then,
in order to be used in a fluorescent sensor, this spectral region
should be removed using a filter that we named the excitation filter.
Moreover, as OPDs and OLEDs are face to each other in our chosen
configuration, and because of the broad absorption spectra of the
OPD, The detector can absorb photons emitted from OLEDs, which
were not absorbed by the analyte. Then, an additional filter, named
the emission filter, should be placed between the detection chamber
and the OPDs in order to completely remove photons arriving
directly from the OLED.
Various dyes were tested for the fabrication ofthe excitation and
emission filters. Fig. 8 shows the absorption spectra of different acid
and basic dyes showing that dye colors can cover the entire visible
spectrum. The various dyes are named using their color name
followed by a number. However, it was not possible for us to find dyes with an absorption peak higher than 650 nm. Indeed, as those
dyes have been mainly developed for use in the visible spectra, no
dyes with IR absorption were identified. We also notice that for
the same type of color, the dyes have different absorption spectra,
although they absorb the same complementary color. For example,
the yellow dye absorbs the majority of the wavelengths in the
blue. The fact that for the same range of color, the absorption width
can be larger or smaller, have a different absorption slope, or have
a shift of 10 nm, offers many more possibilities to fabricate filters
with different optical characteristics.
Optical filters were fabricated using various dyes. For example
Yellow 34, acid red 73 and basic violet 3 based optical filters have
been used in the gelatin resin to make a long-pass filters. Fig. 9
shows optical transmission spectra of these filters. The long-pass
emission filters have a cutoff wavelength of about 500, 600 and
640 nm for Yellow 34, acid red 73 and basic violet 3 based filter
respectively. The transmittance spectra show that optical filters can
be fabricated with absorption dye-based filters.
