The teleost MRC is characterized by its elaborate
intracellular system of branching tubules that
are continuous with the basolateral membrane
(tubular system; Fig. 8). This network of anastomosing
tubules is closely associated with the
mitochondria and is only excluded from the area
of the Golgi apparatus and the band immediately
beneath the apical membrane. The elements of the
tubular system can be found along side the
endoplasmic reticulum making identification
somewhat problematic.
