Abdominal ultrasound revealed free intra-abdominal fluid and edematous
swelling of the small intestine.
Computed tomography (CT)
confirmed the small intestinal edema. An unspecific bowel infection
was suspected and antibiotic treatment with cefazolin and
metronidazole was initiated.
Within hours, the patient developed
rhabdomyolysis, acute renal and acute hepatic failure with disseminated
intravascular coagulation.
