ozone in other pathosystems have clearly showed that postharvest
ozone exposure alone is not an effective alternative to conventional
chemical fungicides because (as other strong oxidizers)
cannot control latent infections or infections in fruit rind wounds.
Nevertheless, depending on disease pressure, fruit condition and
storability, postharvest fruit handling procedures or destination
market, ozone treatments might have a role as components of
integrated disease management programmes against postharvest
diseases, including papaya anthracnose. Therefore, validation with
commercial-scale trials with naturally infected fruit is needed
before potential commercial implementation of ozone treatments.
