In E. coli(Figure 1a, b), the origins tend to be located at a
fixed distance from the pole. Duplication of the foci usually occurs near the pole, and one of the origins moves
rapidly to the opposite pole. In fast growing cells that have
multiple rounds of replication, the origins tend to move
rapidly to the opposite end of the nucleoids to positions
close to mid-cell. The termini tend to move to mid-cell or
to the middle of the nucleoids [8,9
•
].
In newly formed B. subtiliscells (Figure 1c), the origins
also tend to be located close to the poles, but during cell
elongation, the origins remain separated by a fixed distance, so the distance from the pole to the origin
increases. After initiation of DNA replication, the origins
move rapidly to opposite ends of the nucleoids to positions close to the cell poles or to mid-cell. The terminus
region localizes to mid-cell or to the middle of the
nucleoids [10,11•
