The divisions which are often portrayed as a conflict between the Old and New Worlds are actually apparent within every wine-producing country, and separate the small winemaking operations, which to a certain extent continue to favor manual methods of production, from the large-scale industrial wineries, which produce millions of gallons ( hectoliters ) a year and use efficient marketing techniques to sell their wines throughout the world. This does not mean that “handmade” wines are automatically better. All too often, the opposite is the case, and some of the world’s most renowned and highly-prized wines come from industrial plants. Nevertheless, the top wines from the smaller producers remain attractive, for they always bear the mark of the individual and have an inimitable style that cannot be equaled by the large wineries.
