It is concluded in this review that heat stress adversely affects the health and performance
of birds and these adverse effects can be ameliorated by vitamin C supplementation in the
diet or drinking water of poultry birds. It is thus recommended, that a specific dose of
vitamin C should be added as a supplement in the diet, as endogenous synthesis of
vitamin C is adversely affected during heat stress. In both backyard and commercial
poultry, the addition of vitamin C can prove beneficial in alleviating the adverse effects of
heat stress, and in decreasing heat stress-induced-mortality.
