Gender equality is a problem in El Salvador due to ignorance. Men in El Salvador think that a woman’s duty is to cook, clean, wash etc. In the Islamic homes in El Salvador that is where the problem is but in most Christian homes that is not the case. To begin with, participation by women in politics in its infancy in El Salvador, but over the last ten years progress has been made and more and more women are found in political leadership. Ana Luisa Rodriguez de Gonzalez has already served a four year term as a mayor of Atiquizaya. She won her first election in 2003. In the same year 262 municipal councils holding elections, only fifteen were led by women. It is to be hoped that ,come the 2015 election, female representation in El Salvadoran politics will increase yet further to at least 30 per cent with these women occupying positions such as mayors, deputies, in the Assembly and the Central American Parliament.
