Monopolist may take advantage of customers in the absence of an alternative supplier and tends to be inefficient in the absence of competitive pressures. But to some politicians, monopolies are money-printing machines. The lucrative monopolistic businesses can secure, much needed funding required to secure political popularity. Thus, the ties between politics and monopolistic businesses should always be kept under close scrutiny.
