The biggest constraint to increased tourism in Lao PDR is international linkages. Because of limited international air service the majority of international tourists to Lao PDR still arrive by land, and the majority of those come through Thailand. The majority of flights to Lao PDR connect through Bangkok thus Lao PDR remains highly dependent on linkages from Thailand for its international tourists With limited numbers of connections, and typically planes, capacity is severely restricted. Without direct connections outside the region, Lao PDR is less likely to be the only regional destination for Benchmarking Lao PDR tourists arriving by air. Recently, direct flights have begun between Lao PDR and Siem Reap (Angkor) in Cambodia. Direct flights to and from Vietnam ar also starting. Attracting direct international flights in significant numbers will require both infrastructure improvements and increased demand. Currently, 63 international flights a week fly to Vientiane from Bangkok, Hanoi, Chiang Mai Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh, and Kunming. Thirty international flights a week fly to Luang Prabang from Bangkok, Hanoi, Chiang Mai, and Siem Reap.
