In addition to heating, the applied voltage presents the possibility of causing electroporation of the
cell membranes. Cell electroporation is defined as the formation of pores in cell membranes due to
the presence of an electric field; as a consequence, the permeability of the membrane is enhanced
and material diffusion throughout the membrane is achieved (An and King, 2007; Lima, 1999b).
