Chromium Toxicity
The only known cases of chromium toxicity occurred in people exposed to airborne chromium compounds in industrial settings. Since inorganic chromium is so poorly absorbed, extremely high oral intakes would be necessary to attain toxic levels. Numerous experiments show 200 micrograms of inorganic chromium picolinate supplements show DNA damage in animal cells and have raised safety concerns about this supplemental form (see the FYI feature “Chromium, Exercise, and Composition”). To date, no UL has been set for chromium.
