With the original sediment where C. indica grew in as the inoculum,
current densities quickly reached to 31–33 mA/m2 after
3 days (Fig. 1A). This current was generated from the residue electron
donors in the sediment, because no plant had been introduced
into the system yet. After that the acclimated anodes were transferred
to two reactors, one with C. indica to form a PMFC, and the
other was no-plant sediment MFC (SMFC) control.
