While particular species have been recorded in the diet of wahoo
from all regions (i.e., Katsuwonus pelamis, Diodon hystrix); dominant
prey species differed substantially among all study regions
(Fig. 5). For example, wahoo were found to feed primarily on flyingfish
(Cypselurus cyanopterus) around an archipelago off Brazil,
which directly related to C. cyanopterus utilizing this region as a
major spawning area (Vaske Junior et al., 2003). Certain prey taxa
(i.e., Scombridae, Cephalopoda) occur as dominant prey species (by
weight and frequency of occurrence) in all regions, suggesting these
species are essential to the feeding ecology of wahoo (Fig. 5).
