Singapore_A Finnish company plans to build the world’s largest biodiesel plant in
Singapore to convert palm oil into fuel for vehicles.
Neste Oil said it would invest 550 million euros and create 100 jobs.
Singapore’s proximity to palm-oil sites in Malaysia and Indonesia was a factor for locating
Neste’s first overseas biodiesel plant in the city-state, said executive vice-president Jarmo
Honkamaa.
Singapore also is a major oil-refining hub for the region.
Greenhouse-gas emissions from bio-diesel are 40% to 60% less than from conventional
diesel, Neste said.
When completed in 2010, the plant will be able to produce 800,000 tonnes of biodiesel a year.
Most of the output will be shipped to Europe.
