Due to recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) restrictions
on open burning of hazardous waste and munitions, NASA as
well as other military organizations have adapted new regulations
to protect environment from conventional means of destruction of
propellants such as launch to destroy, static firing or open burning.
The most widely used alternative to current OB/OD methods
involves the use of incineration , molten salt oxidation (MSO) ,
supercritical waste oxidation , hydrothermal oxidation (HTO),
wet air oxidation (WAO), supercritical biodegradation and chemical
treatment processes.
