The criteria presented in Box 34-10 should be used as guidelines. Many children with KD do not meet standard diagnostic criteria, and infants often have an atypical presentation. It is therefore important to consider KD as a possible diagnosis in any infant or child with prolonged elevated temperature that is unresponsive to antibiotics and is not attributable to another cause. Recent guidelines were published by the American Heart Association and include a diagnostic algorithm to guide the evaluation and treatment of patients with incomplete symptoms who have prolonged fever or other features of KD.
