Fruit quality analyses
Storage and shelf-life treatments. Fruit
quality was assessed at harvest and after
refrigerated (0 to 1 C) storage for 3 months
in regular atmosphere (RA3, ambient oxygen
levels) and for 3 and 6 months in controlled
atmosphere (CA3 and CA6, respectively, 1.5%
to 2% oxygen). From each experimental plot,
medium-sized (161 to 204 g) apples with 66%
red blush were used for analysis at harvest and
at each postharvest interval and for all the fruit
quality measurements described below. When
removed from storage, apples were placed in
the laboratory under prevailing temperature
conditions (about 22 C) for either 24 h (Day
1) or, to measure the shelf life, for 7 d (Day 7).
These experimental factors comprise each of
the fruit quality analyses that follow.
