Assuming that the cattail bed at the hydraulic application rate of 75 mm day1 produced the highest
biomass yield (22 t [d.m.] ha1) and considering a wastewaterproduction of 250 l perinhabitant, in villages with populations of about 3000 inhabitants, at this wastewater application rate, 1 ha of constructed wetland, would be required to treat 750 m3 day1 of wastewater. So, the biomass produced in this wetland would be 22 t [d.m.] yr1. Taking into account the heating value of cattail biomass, (see Table 8), this biomass production would be enough to feed a domestic boilercapable of heating up during 5 months (6 h day1) a 500 m2 surface, for example the school or other public building of a small village.
